Hammersmith is an urban centre located in west London, about 5 miles west from Charing Cross, on the northern bank of the River Thames. Its name is maybe an abbreviation of Hamoder’s Hythe.
It is when the railroad appeared that Hammersmith started developing. This area became one of the great transport ways of London and an important shopping and financial centre. Numbers of multinational companies have an office there, notably in the unique architecture offices complex located alongside Hammersmith Road (Coca Cola, Disney, L’Oréal).
Hammersmith is an important activities centre, situated near an arterial road leading directly to the heart of London (the A4) and a bridge crossing the River Thames. The central point of the area is the Broadway Centre, which houses a shopping centre, a coach station and an offices complex. King Street is the main shopping centre of Hammersmith, with the second shopping centre of the area (King’s Mall), some small shops, Town Hall, the Lyric Theatre...
Besides the cinema and the pubs of King Street, you can also relax alongside the pedestrian banks of Hammersmith, with its pubs, its sailing clubs and the Furnivall Gardens. Hammersmith also includes a big town park called Ravenscourt Park.
